Player of the Week: Derrick Allen

Derrick Allen (6’8, 225-F/Ole Miss.) has been selected WBA Player of the Week for his performance in leading the Southern Crescent Lightning to a 2-1week. Allen led the Lightning to two big road wins over league leading Jackson (92-90-OT) and Raleigh 106-104. In three games Allen scored 58 points for a 19.3 points per game average and pulled down 28 rebounds for a 9.3 per game average. He was also impressive at the charity stripe, connecting on 20 of 22 free throws. In the last two games he has made 11 of 11 free throws. In their only setback, Allen finished with his second double - double of the season, scoring 21 points and grabbing a season high 13 rebounds.

Lightning returns with new owners and coach, same goal

Last Friday, members of the World Basketball Association gathered at Peachtree City City Hall to announce and introduce the new owners and coach of the Southern Crescent Lightning. The team won the WBA Championship last year and the new owners, brothers and Peachtree City residents T.J. and Todd Hannon, and coach Ricky Benitez vowed to bring back the title this season.

Rockets Sign Josh Powell

Houston Rockets General Manager Daryl Morey announced today that the team has signed center Josh Powell. Powell joins the Rockets from the Barangay Ginebra San Miguel club in the Philippines.

Southern Crescent topples Jackson, Claims Title

Through 20 regular-season games, the Jackson Rage was the driving force behind the new World Basketball Association.
On Saturday night, however, the Southern Crescent Lightning took over with the WBA championship game on the line.
Both teams scrapped and clawed until the end.
But the Lightning made 15 of 18 free throws in the final 1 minute, 22 seconds to claim an 82-79 victory before 5,206 easily the biggest crowd of the season at Jackson State's Williams Athletics and Assembly Center.
